Schönberg and Wildensee hiking and camping

Hell of a ridge line, with vertical drops left and right, better have no vertigo!

When the weather is good in Austria, you got to get out there!

Together with my mum, we had a look at the hiking maps and decided to bag the 2000+ peak of Schönberg, after which Seon and I could continue towards Wildensee and down to Offensee. It seemed like a nice 2 day loop through the Totes Gebirge mountain range.

The plan turned out to be a bit ambitious though!

We only reached the top of Schönberg at 5pm and the Wildensee was a 3-4h walk away. But it was so hot that we really longed for a swim before setting up camp. The first part down from Schönberg we nearly had to climb on all fours, very steep, exposed and rough. A kick ass ridge line. The views all along the way were stunning, with the Dachstein glacier in the distance. By the time we got to Wildensee, we were knackered, and the swim was a mere task before going through the routine of setting up camp and cooking dinner.

What a view to wake up to!
Breakfast time

Next morning we woke up tired but with a beautiful panorama in front of our tent! The blue skies were supposed to be replaced by thunderstorms soon, so we went straight down to Offensee, past the lovely Rinnerhütte and had another lake swim before heading home.

A long way to go down to Offensee
